The royalty of immersive experiences, Secret Squirrel Productions, staged one of their twice-yearly productions of Underground Cinema over 20th - 30th July, with the thrilling medieval theme 'kingdom'. Initially we hoped that the movie in question was cult classic, The Princess Bride, but that began to fade as the cryptic clues from UGC came through weekly and we were unable to make them fit.
Still, this was our first encounter with Underground Cinema and we dove into the opportunity to dress up and rove through the grounds of Eltham's Montsalvat, Jameson Whiskey night warmer in hand. Being a film buff of nearly every romantic and romcom between 1980 - present day, as soon as I walked through the front doors of the gallery hall I knew that all my hopes had been realised - although Robin Hood Men in Tights wouldn't have been a let down at all.
As a small-time event organiser I can only wonder at the complexity of the production; the marvellous way UGC brought a favourite film to life, staging sword fights, intrigues, and even the infamous clearing of the Thieves' Forest - recruiting us passers' by into the Brute Squad.
The night was full of fun, frivolity, intrigue, adventure and a cinematic delight at the end! Underground Cinema, we are hooked, when's the next one?
