Review: Underground Cinema - Kingdom

July 21, 2017

The royalty of immersive experiences, Secret Squirrel Productions, staged one of their twice-yearly productions of Underground Cinema over 20th - 30th July, with the thrilling medieval theme 'kingdom'. Initially we hoped that the movie in question was cult classic, The Princess Bride, but that began to fade as the cryptic clues from UGC came through weekly and we were unable to make them fit.

Still, this was our first encounter with Underground Cinema and we dove into the opportunity to dress up and rove through the grounds of Eltham's Montsalvat, Jameson Whiskey night warmer in hand. Being a film buff of nearly every romantic and romcom between 1980 - present day, as soon as I walked through the front doors of the gallery hall I knew that all my hopes had been realised - although Robin Hood Men in Tights wouldn't have been a let down at all.

As a small-time event organiser I can only wonder at the complexity of the production; the marvellous way UGC brought a favourite film to life, staging sword fights, intrigues, and even the infamous clearing of the Thieves' Forest - recruiting us passers' by into the Brute Squad.

The night was full of fun, frivolity, intrigue, adventure and a cinematic delight at the end! Underground Cinema, we are hooked, when's the next one?

Paynesville is an exciting, up and coming Gippsland town on the shores of Lake Victoria, boasting some gorgeous eateries. @sardineeaterybar has captured the ebb and flow of the water, the freshness of the air in its menu and tactile decor. We spread our meal over a number of share plates: sourdough with seaweed butter, tempura zucchini flowers stuffed with goats cheese, broccoli florets with parmesan, heirloom beetroot and watermelon salad, and mini courgettes with oyster mushrooms. Each dish held flavours that were delicately spun, served in complementing pairs. Certainly an experience to repeat!

We’ve been spending the weekend on Raymond Island, our very favourite country retreat. Surrounded by Lake Victoria, this island is largely a nature reserve and it’s not unusual to have native animals wander across roads and take up residence in yards for the day! Raymond Island is known for its simplicity, allowing the drama of nature to take centre stage. Connected by a short ferry ride to nearby Paynesville, this is a destination full of quiet adventures.

We made our annual pilgrimage to @poco_artisan_icecream this gorgeous, sunny weekend! Didn’t take long at all to lick up a scoopful of fig and pear in a crisp waffle cone

The @royalbotanicgardensvic Australian Garden is stunning in scape and scale: bush, river and red desert laid out over several acres. The Botanic Garden is a brilliant way to spend time over the school holidays, dip your toes into the wading river, amble down the eucalypt walk, climb Howson Hill and wander through the arid garden.

Our first coffee stop for 2019? Suitably, @its.a.vacation, nestled on the corner of Flinders and Exhibition Streets. A very easy going brew and all fab service but with no fuss, exactly how we want to feel year-round 🍍

Tonight is... warm. Tonight is made for a beach walk and gelati! @piccolinagelateria was our stop of choice this heady St Kilda evening. The hustle and bustle miraculously stopped just outside the door and we were invited to make our selection from the most relaxed ice cream peddlers we’ve ever seen so close to a body of water in summer! Our raspberry and lemon sorbets were bursting with refreshing flavour, add this beautiful gelateria to your summer adventure go-to spots🍦
