One look at the location (halfway up the hill) and the logo font, I knew Little May was the cafe for me. The milk jug rinser confirmed my instincts. Little May used their unique blend from Bear Bones to make a comforting caffe latte that shook off the cobwebs from the night before.

Collective Haus, Yandina

The beach in winter is a treat for a Melburnian but sooner or later a shopping day will be necessary. I wasn't able to find a vintage warehouse like Ballarat's The Mill or the Waverley Antique Bazaar (let me know in the comments if there is one for my next trip) but I did come across Yandina's Collective Haus. Set in an old chapel, I was there to praise the gods of style and marvel I did at the gorgeous collection of vintage designer clothes, antique notions, curios and jewellery. While I didn't purchase, my weakness is for retro kitchenware, I did indulge in a latte from the cafe set up in the vestibule.

Skål Coffee, Peregian Beach

On arriving in Peregian Beach at 11am I set my bag down - that's one small bag for a week, I'm still a backpacker at heart - and went on a mission to sniff out the good stuff. Oh yes, I went full hipster in my first five minutes at the beach and I scored big time with the beautiful caramel notes of Padre beans and a perfectly whipped and poured latte from Skål. After a brief foray into other offerings, I came back every day I was at Peregian.

Black Coffee Lyrics is a highly rated spot on Beanhunter and they are good, although the espresso runs a bit weak. These guys are pretty accommodating and cultivate a Brunswick St kind of atmosphere.

Elston, Surfers Paradise

The concierge of the Hilton put me on to Elston on a previous trip (concierges are so helpful even when you're not a guest). Great coffee and breakfast - although our attendant worked hard on the coffee up-sell, insisting our latte glasses were going to be very small (read: normal). I like to change up my sides, never have been a fan of a Benedict with ham, so beware if you do it will cost; when they say no swapsies they mean it.  On the otherhand, they made a latte art bear for me so it all works out!
